I stayed up to follow the launch of the much hyped and rumored laptops last Tuesday along with my fellow mac lovers. We gasped, we laughed, we geeked out, we were left totally wanting to rob an Apple store (or sell our kidneys) for these sexy new laptops. But before you do the same, there are a couple of things you have to be prepared to lose with the new Macbooks and Macbook Pros.
- Macbook loses firewire, Macbook Pro only left with Firewire 800
- Macbook Pro’s screens will only come in glossy, no more matte option
- The Macbook Pro is a little heavier
- You have to purchase the Apple remote separately (this has been the case since the last model)
- You have to purchase the new Mini Display Port adapter separately to connect to projectors and the like
These are not necessarily deal breakers (well not for me), but it does mean that you have additional purchases in tow when you upgrade to these new macs. This whole thing reminds me of when the original iPods came with everything (wall charger, cables etc.) and then suddenly we’re just left with a tiny box and forced to get all these “accessories” when they’re really essentials.
Another surprising thing was how almost all the rumors before the event were accurate! Ironically, it was kind of a kill joy knowing everything before hand. The “OH MY GOD!!!” moments were gone.
Well that’s it, in the bigger picture, these machines are incredible! The new Macbook Pros are superb desktop replacements and the Macbooks reminds me of the time when we used to have the Powerbook G4 12″ – small desktop replacements. All in all, these are worthwhile updates and should be put way up in your list if you are planning to upgrade anytime soon.

i still can’t believe they took away firewire from MB, haha… not that i want to get another one but yea, potong stim betul. and this batch is so expensive.
Hmmm actually not really. Check out the prices of the new Macs at Machines. The MacBookPro’s actually dropped in price. Well from my model at least. Where can I find 7.2k now :S
Whatever it is, the price is definitely cheaper compared to when I bought mine (1st LED Merom MBP 2007). I spent so much just to bring it up to the specs of the latest high-end MBP which cost only 9k. Well, whatever it is, deep down inside, I know we all want one… haha
Actually… Yeah I do want one. I’ve been thinking and scheming ways in which I could get one. But alas the closest I’ve gotten to so far is to get the Student Developer discount. Imagine the High-End MBP for the price of the low-end. Irresistable!
