There is something that I’ve been curious with for the longest time, What is up with “normal people” having a Facebook page of their own?
By normal people I mean people who aren’t public figures or celebrities (or companies, organizations, you get the idea). I always understood that a Facebook page is for these figures to connect with their fans. Hence, the “Be a fan” button you click. And before Facebook was playing the serious new media role it’s playing today, fans would create Facebook pages for their idols, something like fan community for their favorite singer or actor. I find all of that perfectly acceptable. Nothing shocking about it.
But then people started creating pages and inviting me over to be their fan. But what if I do? Does the page become something like a validation form, as if there’s a point system of some sort where one’s celebrity-ness grows with each new “fan”.
These pages are more often that not just announcements for new blog postings or a mass of links that they like, which brings to mind something Stewie said, “…you can see it on my Myspace page, along with songs and movies that other people have created but I use to express my individuality…”.
So yeah, if I would create a Facebook page today, wouldn’t it be the most redundant thing ever? Like what am I trying to say – I’m celebrity material because I’ve done a couple of short films, take plenty of photos and attend events? You see, I consider myself one of the normal people. Very, very normal.
The worst part about this entire thing is, I would actually end up having people being mad at me for not being a “fan” – which really brings us to the crux of the matter - What am I becoming a fan of?
What do you think?
ps. Friends, it’s nothing personal when I don’t become a fan. I just have these ideals and it doesn’t mean I love you less either.
